A month later, East Palestine, Ohio, is still recovering from the train derailment that released over a million gallons of hazardous materials into the surrounding area. On February 3, 38 cars of a Northfolk Southern freight train derailed. The cars were carrying hazardous materials including vinyl chloride, a known carcinogen, and butyl acrylate, and a chemical fire ensued for multiple days, releasing toxins into the air.
While the environmental impacts of the derailment have been front in center, there has been little insight into the human impact. This is where the NADA Foundation has come in to help the local community.
The NADA Foundation Emergency Relief Fund (ERF) has donated $6,000 in gift cards to 20 employees of Brittain Motors, Inc. in East Palestine, Ohio to provide relief in the wake of the disaster, helping pay for clean water and other necessary resources to protect themselves and their families from the hazardous pollution.
