This week marked the 100th anniversary of the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA).
The association was originally formed when 30 auto dealers traveled to the nation’s capital to convince Congress not to impose a luxury tax on the automobile. They successfully argued that the automobile is a necessity of American life, not a luxury. NADA was later incorporated in Chicago on August 22, 1917.
Although much has changed in the past century, NADA's member companies continue to to thrive as a cornerstone to the American dream. These family owned business--passed down from generation to generation--invest heavily in their local communities and are directly responsible for more than 1.1 million American jobs.
Today, NADA represents 16,700 new-car and -truck dealerships, with 32,500 franchises, both domestic and international.
The centennial festivities began earlier this year as part of the NADA Convention & Expo in New Orleans, where attendees celebrated at Mardi Gras World. And this week, NADA staff continued the celebration with an employee appreciation picnic.
